AI-Driven Policing Is A Serious Threat To Black British Women

A few months ago, I found myself sitting in the High Court watching youth worker Shaun Thompson and Silkie Carlo, director of civil liberties campaign group Big Brother Watch, challenge whether the Metropolitan Police’s use of live facial recognition (LFR) technology was lawful. The case focused in particular on how and where the technology is deployed. As barristers debated surveillance, public safety and policing powers, I kept returning to the same question: what does all of this mean for Blac...

“MANCHESTER HAS a problem. Not just a representation problem, but a structural one.” That was the hard-hitting message from Ngozi Weller, co-chair of pro-manchester’s Racial Equity Group (REG) and founder of Aurora Inc., at the inaugural REG Connect 2025 summit.

“We see colour in the room, but we don’t see it in decision-making. That’s not diversity, that’s deflection,” she addded, very much setting the tone for the day.

We Can’t Allow Racism To Distract From Adolescence’s Crucial Message

Incels, Andrew Tate, male rage and the menacing Manosphere: These are the images that come to mind when I think of the prominent themes grappled with in Adolescence — Netflix’s new hit show that has the nation in a chokehold. What doesn’t come to my mind, however, is an agenda to demonise white British boys and men. And yet, despite the series’ growing critical acclaim, countless social media users are in uproar over the series’ depiction of a very young, white male murder suspect…

So you posted a black square a year ago, but what now?

For many white people, and many individuals from non-black communities of colour, the BLM protests were merely a spectacle...something outrageous to keep an eye on in the midst of a seemingly never ending, monotonous lockdown. For black people across the globe however, the protests represented much more than that. They were an act of defiance against a colossal system of oppression that continues to endanger our lives, livelihoods and sanity. For once in many of our lifetimes, we felt heard. Of
